Man dies after falling from reversing truck in tire store parking lot
WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A man has died following a slow-speed crash in the parking lot of a Walterboro tire shop.
The incident happened Tuesday morning off Hampton Street, according to Colleton County Fire Rescue.
Officials believe the pickup truck was backing up in the parking lot at Budget Tire around 9:15 a.m. when the driver fell out and suffered traumatic injuries.
The truck then made a U-turn, drove through a hedge, and struck a large sign which ripped the driver’s side door from the hinges. It then hit a parked pickup truck before stopping at a second hedge.
Bystanders came to the man’s aid. When firefighter-paramedics arrived, the man was partially in the hedge near Hampton Street, officials said.
“He was treated at the scene, including the administration of whole blood and TXA. The patient was transported emergent in Fire-Rescue Medic 1 to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with the CARE Flight helicopter stationed there,” officials said.
The victim was eventually airlifted to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center for emergency surgery; however, fire rescue officials said the man died from his injuries a short time later.
A second person was taken to Colleton Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
