Water Mission nonprofit responds to East Africa flooding

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Christian engineering nonprofit is responding to ongoing flooding in multiple countries throughout East Africa with emergency safe water.

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding for more than six weeks. Water Mission reports that hundreds of people have died and over 485,000 people have been left homeless without access to clean and safe water.

Officials say Water Mission has in-country offices in Kenya and Tanzania and has established water, sanitation and hygiene programs. The organization has also deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team to Kenya to help local staff with emergency safe water needs.

“The spread of waterborne diseases are a critical concern in the days and weeks after a disaster,” said Water Mission CEO and President George C. Greene IV, PE. “Water Mission’s Disaster Assistance Response Team and in-country staff in Kenya and Tanzania are bringing relief with emergency safe water access to the thousands in need.”

Water Mission officials say its staff has deployed safe water treatment systems to get emergency water flowing for 3,500 people in Khukunda Camp, Kenya.
