College of Charleston student, set to graduate in May, killed in Charleston hit and run

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A senior student at the College of Charleston was one of two pedestrians killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday morning on Morrison Drive.

Lizzy Zito, 20, of Simpsonville was a psychology major at the college, according to Mike Roberton, senior director of media relations. She was set to graduate this May, completing her degree in three years.

“We ask that you please keep Lizzy’s family and friends in your thoughts during this most difficult of time […] Lizzy’s family shared that she was musically talented and loved both creating music and animals deeply,” said Robertson in a message to the campus community.

Zito was one of two women struck and killed on Morrison Drive near the Ravenel Bridge early Sunday morning. A spokesman from the Charleston Police Department (CPD) said a citizen called police to report two people were unresponsive and off the runway just after 8:30 a.m.

Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal also identified Arianna Gamber, 20, of Simpsonville as the other pedestrian killed in the crash. It’s not currently known if Gamber was a college student or her connection to Zito.

Police have not made any arrests in the case as of Tuesday morning.

As the college campus grieves, school leaders provided the community with resources including information for the college’s counseling center, support services, and self-care strategies.

“A community is a community because its members turn to each other for support during trying times. Losing close friends and fellow students is always difficult and brings forth sorrow. Our community exudes care and compassion through each individual member and through its organized resources. Please remind one another about the number of resources available, and encourage each other to utilize them,” the college said.
