Roughly 65,000 attend Charleston Airshow

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Thousands of spectators gathered at Joint Base Charleston this weekend for an annual airshow filled with breathtaking stunts and impressive flyovers.

Roughly 65,000 people came out for the two-day event, preliminary numbers show. And even if you weren’t able to watch the show on-site, many caught some of the in-air demonstrations from around the Charleston area.

The sky over Joint Base Charleston was transformed by expert pilots, performing all sorts of precision maneuvers and stunts. But those on the ground had an opportunity to view myriad aircraft and learn about how our air force works to keep the country safe.

Col. David Myrik, 437th Airlift Wing Deputy Commander, said part of what makes the Charleston Airshow so unique is that it showcases the impressive things that the U.S. Air Force does every day all over the world, and all the various types of aircraft that are used – from intelligence and surveillance places to bomber aircraft.

He said besides just being fun, events like these are great community builders that help instill national pride while also helping to recruit the next generation of service men and women – and he said they are also excellent morale builders and help with retention.

“I think for a lot of us out there, it is kind of a sense of pride- even talking to my wife this weekend it’s like, we are used to this, we kind of see all sides of a mission, deployments, and the business ends of the Air Force, but it is really cool to kind of show this to others that we are capable of all these things, and it’s kind of a source of pride I think for a lot of the military members,” said Col. Myrick.

Joint Base Charleston also thanks area law enforcement agencies who teamed up to help with parking, traffic, and were on site to make sure everything went smoothly.

They hope to host another airshow in 2026.
