North Charleston police chief announces retirement

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – North Charleston Police Chief Greg Gomes will retire this summer after nearly a year as the department’s leader.

Gomes became police chief in May 2023, after the department’s then-leader, Reggie Burgess, retired to focus on his mayoral campaign.

He sent a letter to North Charleston city leaders saying he planned to retire on June 30, 2024.

“For the last 30 years, this police department and city have been a huge part of my life,” Chief Gomes said in his resignation letter. “I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve with some of the absolute best law enforcement professionals in the country.”

Chief Gomes began serving as assistant chief of the North Charleston Police Department in February 2020 and served in various leadership roles within the agency.

He worked as Deputy Police Chief of the Investigative Division from October 2016 to February 2020, and as Captain of the Office of Professional Standards and Compliance Division from June 2013 to October 2016.

Gomes thanked former Mayor Keith Summey and current Mayor Reggie Burgess in his letter, offering gratitude for their leadership. He also thanked the department for their support and encouragement.
