Wastewater spills in Charleston Harbor after pipeline failure at Plum Island plant

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A pipeline failure caused thousands of gallons of wastewater to spill into Charleston Habor on Wednesday afternoon.

The failure occurred at Charleston Water System’s wastewater treatment plant on Plum Island around midday, the utility company said.

Approximately 9,950 gallons of wastewater was released into Charleston Harbor.

This map from Charleston Water System shows an area to avoid following a wastewater spill on April 3.

People are asked to avoid an area of the waterway until sampling confirms that bacteria levels have returned to normal.
