Space heater may have sparked fire that destroyed Walterboro home

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A space heater may be to blame for a Wednesday morning fire that destroyed a Walterboro residence.

During the early morning hours, an off-duty firefighter was traveling on Tyler Road, a rural and lightly traveled road, when they called 9-1-1 to report the home was “already on the ground,” according to Colleton County Fire Rescue.

Fire crews arrived to find a single-story, wood-frame home that had been destroyed and had collapsed.

Firefighters worked to cool down any remaining debris and stayed on the scene for over an hour.

The occupants left the home about two hours prior. “They noted a space heater was on in the home. The cause was most likely the space heater,” said Fire-Rescue officials.
