St. George police chief suspended amid investigation

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCBD) – The Town of St. George’s police chief has been suspended with pay amid an investigation, Mayor Kevin Hart told News 2.

Mayor Hart said town council suspended Chief Brett Camp on March 5 pending the outcome of an investigation from an outside source.

“I know there’s a lot of speculation in town. The council did this for the town, the citizens of the town of St. George, and for Chief Camp,” the mayor said. “And without any delays, everything will be taken care of by the outside source, and as soon as we know some information, it will be published.”

The town has hired a law firm to conduct the investigation; however, they are not releasing any information regarding the investigation. But Mayor Hart said he does not believe it is criminal in nature.

“Right now the second in command, Captain Adam Dunway, is running the police department. He has not been promoted or anything to Chief in charge, but he is just running it,” explained Mayor Hart.

There are eight police officers and a victim’s advocate within the St. George Police Department.

“On March 5, 2024, the Town Council motion carried to suspend chief Brett Camp with pay pending an investigation by an outside source. While there is much public speculation, Council is not able to answer further questions at this time. Council acted in good faith, and in response to information that was brought to its attention. The Council members did so as elected officials on behalf of the citizens of the Town of St. George and Chief camp. The review process must be allowed to continue unimpeded by speculation and innuendo. We ask that the citizens remain patient and allow the process to conclude.”

Mayor Hart said they don’t know how soon the investigation will be complete.

Chief Camp has been the chief since 2016. “He’s been here a good while. And he is loved by the citizens of the town,” the mayor added.

Once that law firm has completed its investigation, St. George Town Council will decide how to move forward.
