Berkeley County man blames beaver dam for flooding on his property

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)- A Berkeley County man says beavers are to blame for continuous flooding on his property.

“We just have constant flooding,” Charles Cannon said. “I’ve talked to the state several times. We put in work orders. We try to catch it before the water gets up high but everything I got is underwater.”

Cannon’s property is located off Highway 17-A down Beaver Dam Road in Berkeley County between Jamestown and Macedonia, a spot he says is living up to its name.

He says that beaver dams built near the tree line of his property are blocking water flow, causing his yard to flood — even on sunny days. He said the South Carolina Department of Transportation used to take care of the problem regularly.

“It used to be on maintenance type deal,” Cannon said. “If we could put it in a quarterly or semi-annually, something to keep an eye on it.”

Cannon added that there used to be a grate on the concrete culvert that made it more difficult for beavers to pile their debris inside causing it to clog up.

“I mean, we need some help. They are there. The road’s named Beaver Dam Road for a reason,” he said.

SCDOT officials told News 2 that the agency’s Berkeley County maintenance crew “is aware of the issue and is working to get it resolved.”

Shortly after, Cannon confirmed that an SCDOT maintenance crew stopped by his home to assess the situation.
