IAAM to host an “evening of poetry and music”
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The International African American Museum (IAAM) will host an evening of music and poetry with an internationally acclaimed poet and award-winning artist on Friday.
Jessica Care Moore will perform at the IAAM “From Dreams to Reality: An Evening of Poetry & Music” event to honor the perseverance, achievements, and hard-fought victories of African Americans throughout history and into the present.
“I remember when Jessica Care Moore won the Apollo amateur night five times with poems, and those growing up in the 90s likely recall how brutal those audiences could be,” said Malika N. Pryor the Chief Learning and Engagement officer at IAAM. “It made a phenomenal impact on the culture, and that moment reverberated for years to come as slam poetry made its way into the mainstream.”
Moore’s acoustic performance will feature an opening performance by Charleston Poet Laureate Asiah Mae.
“We often see Moore with a full band, but this performance will be intimate. To hear her now, nearly 30 years later, as a world-renowned poet and performer as profound in her prose as she is electric in her delivery will be an absolute treat for the audience,” Pryor added.
The event will be held from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the IAAM, located at 14 Wharfside Street. To purchase tickets, please click here.
