Law enforcement searching for man wanted on attempted murder and related felony charges

BERKELEY COUNTY S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in Berkeley County are searching Friday evening for a man wanted on multiple charges including attempted murder.

About 50 law enforcement officers are searching for 24-year-old Charles Edward Britt, Jr. in a rural area near St. Stephen.

Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis told News 2 that Britt was seen running from the back of a house on Welldrillers Lane earlier Friday.

They are currently searching in the Bethea Road area near Macedonia. Sheriff Lewis said that on Thursday Britt attempted to shoot his father. He shot at him but did not hit him.

Earlier Friday, a deputy saw Britt run across a line by the woods, where they are searching for him, so they know he is in the wooded area.

Sheriff Lewis said the public is not in danger because Britt is in a wooded area that backs up to the national forest. Britt is wearing camouflage clothing.

K9s from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are tracking Britt. They also have a SLED helicopter searching for him.

Britt is wanted for assault, attempted murder, and stealing a vehicle.

Probation and parole have several charges for Britt, including two counts of pointing and presenting, armed robbery, grand larceny, two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and two counts of possession of a firearm during a violent crime by a felon.

Britt was seen in the Alvin community, and someone he knew picked him up at some point.

Four people are in custody charged with harboring Britt.

Authorities say Britt is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

On Wednesday, deputies responded to a home on Tea Rose Lane after receiving a call about an assault that occurred on Eggleston Way.

Victims told deputies that they met with Britt at their home, and that he was enraged, accusing the victims of calling the police on him, according to BCSO.

Authorities were told that Britt grabbed a pole from the ground and hit the victim in the chest. Britt then grabbed a pistol from a truck, held it to the victim’s head, and pulled the trigger.

The pistol misfired and did not discharge a bullet, BCSO said. He then pointed the gun at the victim’s dog and shot at the ground before fleeing.
