International African American Museum to host author talk at Burke High School

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The International African American Museum will host an author talk on Thursday at Burke High School with a national award-winning author and scholar.

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi will discuss his latest work, Barracoon: Adopted for Young Readers, a younger adaption of Barracoon by Zora Neal Hurston. The story follows the life of Cudjo Lewis, one of the last survivors of the Atlantic human trade.

“With Burke’s historic roots as a school for African Americans in the late nineteenth century and its role in fostering student activism during the civil rights movement, it serves as a powerful setting for a conversation on preserving and sharing history that can help educate, shape, and nurture younger generations,” said the press release.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. The purchase of an adult ticket will include a signed copy of Barracoon: Adopted for Young Readers. Tickets can be purchased here.

Burke High School is located at 244 President Street in Charleston. The event is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
