NCPD: Man entered North Charleston store with rifle, shot himself
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in North Charleston are investigating after they said a man entered a store and shot himself Thursday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Scott Perry with the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) said the agency received a call for an active shooter at a shopping center off Rivers Avenue around 1:30 p.m.
Officers say the unknown man entered the business with a long rifle, which triggered panic inside the store. Patrons and staff were safely evacuated.
While officers were preparing to enter the store, DD’s Discounts, Deputy Chief Perry said a single gunshot was heard and then officers found an armed individual dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the store.
No bystanders or law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
Police said there is no indication that he made a threat or threatened to harm anyone else other than himself.
An investigation is ongoing, people are asked to avoid the area.
