School bus driver, 6 students taken to hospital after crash in West Ashley
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Police Department responding to a crash involving a school bus and box truck in the West Ashley area Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Orleans Road and Sam Rittenburg Boulevard, according to a tweet from CPD.
Six students and the school bus driver were transported to a local hospital after they apparently suffered minor injuries.
Police say there were 29 students onboard, en route to West Ashley High School, at the time of the crash.
Authorities found that a large commercial box truck attempted to make a left turn in front of the school bus but failed to yield right of way which caused the crash.
“The driver of the box truck was issued a citation. Charleston County School District officials arrived on scene and contacted the parents of all involved students,” CPD said.
The uninjured students were taken to West Ashley High by another bus. The scene was cleared and the roadway was reopened around 9:30 a.m.
Parents of all involved were contacted by the Charleston County School District, police say.
