Man found guilty in deadly Aug. 2019 shooting on Hanover Street

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was found guilty Thursday in a deadly shooting that took place on Hanover Street in August 2019.

Shannon Johnson, 18 at the time of his arrest, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after police said he shot 41-year-old Timothy Haman in the back five times following a brief verbal altercation.

Officials said the confrontation began as a simple verbal dispute between the two strangers.

Haman was attempting to flee to his home when he was shot, according to Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson.

The victim was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina where he later died.

U.S. Marshals arrested Johnson two days after the deadly shooting. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras in the neighborhood which helped Charleston Police identify Johnson as the shooter.

Closing arguments were heard in the trial Thursday morning before Judge R. Keith Kelly charged the jury in determining whether Johnson was guilty of the crime.

The jury found the man guilty upon their return. He was sentenced to 50 years on the murder charge and five years on the weapons charge.

“This case is a shining example of the serious accountability we get when the community works with us and with law enforcement to solve cases. The community’s video evidence was critical in this conviction,” said Solicitor Scarlett Wilson.
