Candle sparks Cannon Street house fire
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A candle is believed to have sparked an early Sunday morning fire on Cannon Street.
Charleston County 911 received multiple calls about a residential fire just before 6 a.m.
Crews with the Charleston Fire Department and partner agencies found smoke and flames coming from the two-story home when they arrived at the scene.
“Firefighters quickly entered and searched both levels of the home to verify everyone had escaped, worked to gain control of the fire, and started salvage operations to prevent additional damage,” Charleston Fire officials said.
Fire investigators determined the fire started on the home’s first floor. The occupants said they had a candle burning, were alerted to the fire, and discovered drapes near the candle had ignited.
“The occupants attempted to extinguish the fire before they had to leave the home and call 911,” officials said.
The cause of the fire is considered accidental.
Two occupants and one guest were displaced from the home. No injuries were reported.
