Hundreds splash into 2025 during Bill Murray look-a-like polar plunge
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) – Hundreds of people gathered on Folly Beach early Wednesday morning for an invigorating dip into the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s a New Year’s Day tradition unlike any other – people across the country usher in the new year with a quick splash into very cold water. This version, held each year on Folly Beach, invites people to dress as their favorite Bill Murray characters.
It was the 11th year for the Bill Murray look-a-like costume contest and polar plunge. Those who braved the cold ocean – and spectators – gathered beachside near the Tides Hotel before the big run into the water.
“It was cold. It wasn’t unbearable, but it was it was definitely cold,” said Charlie Hastings, who participated in the plunge. “We live out here on Folly, so it’s really nice seeing the community come together and do this every single year.”
“It was definitely colder than I like, but as far as polar plunges, we got away pretty, pretty easy,” said Sarah Hastings. “It felt great, and there’s not a lot of wind. The waves aren’t big. It was a good time.”
The water temperature on Folly Beach was in the lower 50s Wednesday morning.
Kelly Travers, event coordinator for the Folly Association of Business, said the event is a great way to jump in and free yourself of things from the previous year and start anew in 2025.
“We bring all the fun with some live music. People dress up just wanting to come out and have a great time, and then into the ocean- then they go back on to Center Street and go to some New Year’s Day parties that the different businesses are offering,” she said.
Prizes were awarded for Best Overall Bill Murray, Best Girl, Best Guy, and Best Team/Family Costume.
